Hey Terre Haute homeowners!
Does your bathroom look unchanged since the 1920’s like the one above? (No, we did not install that one…)
I often get asked about the cost of bathroom remodels. It’s a big question, and the answer is – it depends! Since every bathroom and homeowner’s vision is unique, pricing can vary significantly. To help you understand what goes into a bathroom remodel bid, I wanted to share some insights into how I approach pricing projects.
The Basics: What’s Included?
When I put together a bid, I’m considering everything from preparing the home for construction from putting down protective materials from the entrance to the bathroom, demolition, tub and showers, vanities, lighting, and plumbing to all of the finishing touches.
Here’s a general breakdown of what’s typically of interest:
- Demolition: Removing existing fixtures, flooring, tile, and sometimes even walls.
- Plumbing: Relocating or replacing pipes, installing new fixtures (toilet, sink, shower/tub), and ensuring proper drainage.
- Electrical: Updating wiring, adding or relocating outlets and lighting fixtures, and ensuring everything meets code.
- Framing/Drywall: Repairing or replacing wall studs, installing new drywall where needed, and preparing surfaces for tile or paint.
- Flooring: Installing new flooring material.
- Tile/Surround: Installing shower/tub surrounds and/or tile work.
- Fixtures: Installing new toilet, sink, shower/tub, faucets, and showerheads.
- Finishes: Painting, trim work, and other finishing details.
- Permits: Securing necessary permits for the project.
Price Ranges: A Starting Point
While every project is different, I know most people just want a ballpark figure to make plans, so here’s a general idea of what you can expect in terms of starting prices for a complete bathroom remodel in Terre Haute and the surround areas from us:
- $10,000 and Up: Total Bathroom Refresh (usually over 3 days install time)
This price point typically reflects a functional and attractive bathroom remodel using cost-effective and durable materials for you to enjoy for years to come. This would be a complete removal of everything there currently, besides maybe the drywall depending on its condition. This upgrade could include vinyl plank or waterproof laminate flooring, a standard plastic or acrylic shower/tub surround (There’s even a composite tub surround that looks like tile!), new trim, vanity, mirror, paint, and new fixtures throughout. This option is great for homeowners looking for a clean and updated space without breaking the bank. There are some pretty incredible face lifts that can be done at this price point.
- $15,000 and Up: Adding Custom Tile work to the space (usually over 5 days install time)
Once we move into custom tile work throughout the bathroom, the price naturally increases. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, custom tile work offers several practical benefits. It allows for a truly personalized design, reflecting your unique style and taste. Custom tile installations can also increase the value of your home, as they are often seen as a higher-end feature. With the vast array of styles, colors, and sizes available, custom tile work provides unparalleled design flexibility, allowing you to create a bathroom that is both beautiful and functional for years to come. Tile installation is more labor-intensive, and the cost of the tile itself can vary widely. This price range often includes nicer fixtures, perhaps a glass shower enclosure, and potentially some minor layout changes.
- $20,000 and Beyond: Luxury and Larger Scope (usually over 5 day install time)
- Premium Materials: Forget standard ceramic or porcelain. High-end bathrooms often feature natural stone like marble-looking porcelain, quartz, granite, or travertine for countertops, flooring, and shower surrounds. These materials exude elegance and offer unique veining and textures. Exotic hardwoods might be used for custom cabinetry or accent walls.
- Custom Cabinetry: No pre-fabricated vanities here! Custom-built cabinets offer tailored storage solutions and can be crafted from high-quality materials with details like dovetail joinery and soft-close drawers. They can be designed to maximize space and complement the overall aesthetic.
- Luxury Fixtures: Think beyond standard chrome faucets and showerheads. High-end bathrooms often feature designer fixtures from renowned brands, crafted from unique materials, smart faucets with touchless operation, rain showers with multiple settings, or freestanding soaking tubs.
- Advanced Technology: Integrating technology can elevate a bathroom to a new level of luxury. Consider heated floors for ultimate comfort, smart toilets with bidet functions and personalized settings, and steam showers for a spa-like experience. Integrated sound systems, mood lighting, and smart mirrors can further enhance the ambiance.
- Intricate Tile Work: In a high-end remodel, tile becomes an art form. Intricate patterns, mosaics, and custom-designed tile installations can create a stunning focal point. Consider using unique tile shapes, textures, or materials like glass or metal accents.
- Spa-like Features: Transform your bathroom into a personal oasis with features like a sauna, a whirlpool tub, or a dedicated vanity area with ample storage and professional lighting. A built-in coffee bar or mini-fridge can add an extra touch of indulgence.
- Architectural Details: High-end bathrooms often incorporate architectural details like vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, or custom-designed lighting to create a sense of grandeur. These details can add character and visual interest to the space.
- Attention to Detail: In a luxury bathroom, no detail is overlooked. From the placement of towel bars to the selection of hardware, every element is carefully considered to ensure both functionality and aesthetics. High-end finishes and meticulous craftsmanship are evident throughout the space.
- Professional Design: A high-end bathroom remodel typically involves working with a professional designer (don’t worry, we know an incredible one!) who can bring your vision to life and ensure that all elements work together harmoniously. They can help you select the right materials, fixtures, and finishes to create a cohesive and luxurious space.
Factors That Influence Cost:
Several factors can influence the final cost of your bathroom remodel:
- Size of the bathroom: Larger bathrooms generally cost more to remodel.
- Materials: The type of tile, flooring, fixtures, and other materials you choose will significantly impact the price.
- Complexity of the project: Relocating plumbing or changing the layout will add to the cost.
- Unexpected issues: Sometimes, during demolition, we uncover hidden problems like mold or structural damage, which can require additional work and expense. We discuss our change order process before the start of the project so you’re ready for anything – even the unexpected.
