Honestly, the picture above is some of our best work. It’s definitely not a picture I took driving through Terre Haute…. probably saved a fortune on ridge shingles on that install though.

Just kidding. We lay shingles straight.

Decoding Shingle Roof Costs in Terre Haute: A Homeowner’s Guide
“If your roof is experience a leaking emergency, close this contractor blog and call (812) 605-2560” – You need to read that as one of those “If ____ is happening hang up and dial 911”. I crack myself up. Anyways….
Hey Terre Haute homeowners! I’m Derek Snyder, a local roofing contractor to Terre Haute. I own White Rock Contracting LLC. We have multiple veterans on staff (Army and Marines) and a licensed home inspector as our crew leader. I often get asked about the cost of shingle roofs. It’s a significant investment that I feel is important to discuss, and understand the factors that influence pricing is crucial. This guide will break down shingle roof costs in Terre Haute, helping you make informed decisions.
What Influences Shingle Roof Costs?
Several factors contribute to the overall cost of a new shingle roof:
- Roof Size: The most significant factor is the square footage of your roof. Larger roofs naturally require more materials, dump fees, and labor, increasing the price.
- Roof Complexity: Roofs with multiple levels, dormers, valleys, and chimneys require more intricate work, adding to the cost. Simpler roof designs are generally less expensive to shingle.
- Unwalkable Roofs: Roofs with steep pitches or other features that make them difficult to walk on require additional safety measures (harness that take time to install) and specialized equipment. This increases labor costs and extends the project timeline.
- Shingle Material: The type of shingle you choose greatly impacts the price. We focus on high-quality architectural and designer shingles for long-lasting performance. I feel as if you’re spending the money for a new roof, I want to ensure it will last a long time. We refuse to cheap out on the materials. You get what you pay for with roofing materials.
- Underlayment: The underlayment beneath the shingles provides an extra layer of protection. Generally the type of underlayment is specified by manufacturers for them to offer their warranty.
- Decking: If the roof decking (the plywood or OSB sheathing) is damaged and needs replacing, this adds to the project cost. On much older homes, sometimes the decking is 1×8 boards- each manufacturer specifies allowed gap tolerances. Many times, we will recommend sheathing the roof to ensure the warranty is applicable.
- Labor: Labor costs vary depending on the complexity of the roof, safety measures required, and the local market rates in Terre Haute.
- Removal and Disposal: The cost of removing and disposing of the old roofing materials is included in the estimates. Dump fees recently doubled this year.. so that’s great.
- Permits: Roofing projects typically require permits, and the cost of these varies.
How We Determine Your Roof’s Size and a Rough Estimate without ever bothering you:
Accurate measurement is essential for fair pricing. Here’s how we approach it:
- Precise Measurements: We only nee your address, and we can use specialized tools to accurately measure your roof’s surface area from satellite imagery. So we can get you a ballpark estimate without having to disrupt your daily life.
- Desired Shingle Type: If you have a preference for a specific brand (Owens Corning Duration, Malarkey, Atlas, etc.), let us know.
- Gutter costs: With this information we also get the eave measurements so we can discuss gutter costs with you as well.
Based on this information, we can provide a rough estimate. Keep in mind that this is just an estimate, and the final price may vary after a thorough inspection.
On-Site Appointment and Inspection
If the rough estimate aligns with your budget, we’ll schedule an on-site appointment. This is critical, as it allows us to:
- Identify Potential Issues: We’ll inspect your roof for existing damage, such as multiple layers of shingles, rotted wood, ventilation issues, or other structural problems.
- Attic Inspection: We’ll also conduct an attic inspection to check for adequate ventilation, signs of leaks, mechanical lines too close to the decking, and any decking damage from the underside. This is important because problems in the attic can affect the roof’s performance and lifespan.
- Accurate Measurements: Confirm the roof’s measurements and complexity, especially for unwalkable roofs.
- Discuss Shingle Options: We can discuss the pros and cons of different shingle materials, including Owens Corning Duration, Malarkey, and Atlas shingles, and help you choose the best option for your budget and needs.
